the structure of atoms

atom β†’ the smallest particle of an element

atoms are made up of subatomic particles β†’ proton, neutron and electron

mass of a proton β†’ 1

mass of neutron β†’ 1

mass of electron β†’ 1/1840

charge of subatomic particles:

charge of an atom is always neutral

same amount of protons and electrons

number of neutrons can vary and does not affect charge of atom.

electrical charge mass compared to 1 proton position in atom
proton positive 1 inside the nucleus
neutron neutral 1 inside the nucleus
electron negative 1/1840 outside the nucleus

empty space β†’ parts of the atom not taken up by particles

Ions

ion β†’ an atom or molecule with a net charge

two types of ions:

  1. negative ions
    1. forms when neutral atom gains electrons β†’ more electrons than protons
    2. has a negative sign because it now has a negative charge as there are more electrons than protons
  2. positive ions
    1. forms when neutral atom loses electrons β†’ more protons than electrons
    2. has a plus sign because it now has a positive charge as there are more electrons than protons

electrical attraction

Protons and electrons

atomic number β†’ the number of protons in an atom
